Green Bay Packers Urged To Pursue Former Pro Bowl Quarterback
Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers have their franchise quarterback in Jordan Love. Just about everyone would agree with that at this point.

It’s what the Packers have behind Love at the position that may be a cause for concern.

Right now, Sean Clifford is Green Bay’s primary backup under center, and while the Packers seem to like him, he isn’t exactly great insurance.

In the event of an injury to Love, the Packers would probably be better served having a veteran to step in and fill in that gap.

That’s why Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine feels Green Bay should pursue Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill is probably the best quarterback remaining on the free-agent market, and quite frankly, it’s surprising that he is still available.

Either Tannehill’s price tag is a bit too high, or he is merely waiting for the perfect situation. If it’s the latter, enter the Packers.

Tannehill spent the last five years with the Tennessee Titans and had a pretty impressive run with the club, particularly early on.

During his first season with the Titans in 2019, Tannehill ended up replacing Marcus Mariota. In 12 appearances and 10 starts, he threw for 2,742 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 70.3 percent of his passes and posting a league-high 117.5 passer rating en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

The following year, Tannehill enjoyed arguably the best season of his career, totaling 3,819 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven picks while completing 65.5 percent of his throws and registering a 106.5 passer rating.

Tannehill has certainly declined since then, and in 2023, he was ultimately supplanted as the starter by Will Levis, registering four touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games and eight starts.

However, it’s hard to imagine that the 35-year-old can’t be a a capable backup somewhere.

Tannehill, who played his collegiate football at Texas A&M, was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins with the eighth overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He spent seven seasons with the Dolphins, but didn’t truly begin to flourish until he arrived in Tennessee.

There is still plenty of time for the Packers to consider adding Tannehill, and it would probably be a wise decision. Tannehill may even be able to help Love by providing some veteran leadership going forward.
