Texans owner Cal McNair says Tank Dell will make a ‘full recovery’ after being wounded in shootout
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Houston Texans owner Cal McNair said that wide receiver Tank Dell will make a “full recovery” after being injured in a shootout in Florida last month. McNair didn’t provide details of the nature of Dell’s injury, but the Texans said he suffered a “minor would” the day after the shooting that took place on April 27.

“It looks like Tank will make a full recovery,” McNair said at the team’s annual charity golf classic, per the Associated Press. “We saw him in the office the other day and he looked good, in good spirits. But he’ll have to rehab and get back to where he was.”

According to the Houston Chronicle, Dell was shot in a Florida nightclub and caught in the crossfire of a multi-person altercation he was not involved in. “We have been made aware that Tank Dell was a victim of a shooting in Sanford, Fla. last night,” the Texans said in a statement. “He sustained a minor wound but has been released from the hospital and he is in good spirits. We are in contact with him and his family and will provide more updates when appropriate but we ask that you please respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the incident.”

Tank Dell’s rookie season was cut short due to an injury

Dell was selected by the Texans in the third round of last year’s draft after having a standout career with the Houston Cougars. In his rookie season, the 24-year-old caught 47 passes for 709 yards and seven touchdowns. Dell also recorded 51 rushing yards on 11 carries. He just played in 11 games because he suffered a fractured fibula in Week 13 and had to miss the rest of the season.

“God gives his strongest soldiers the toughest battles, so it made me grow a lot and made me sit back and really dedicate my whole life to playing football,” Dell told reporters in January, per Sports Illustrated. “It showed me how much I need this sport. This is what keeps me going. This is my blessing in life.”

Dell also talked about the Texans winning the AFC South and reaching the divisional round of the playoffs. “It’s been great seeing the guys accomplish so much,” Dell said of the season. “So many people sold us short this year. For them to go to the second round … we wanted more, but that’s just a stepping stone, a starting point, to what we’re going to be in the future.”
