The Montreal Canadiens announce that Head Coach Martin St. Louis re-signs an extension with the club. The club decided to exercise their option on his contract. He had one year left on his current contract, and this extension keeps him around until the conclusion of the 2026-27 season. Thus far in his tenure as the Habs bench boss, many of the young forwards have flourished in their development. Keeping him around is a boost of confidence to not only St. Louis, but also the young players under his tutelage.

Martin St. Louis Re-Signs for Two Years as Canadiens Head Coach

Since coming on board with the club, it was known that Montreal was going through a rebuilding phase. Therefore, the Canadiens have not been a playoff team and it is reflected in St. Louis’ coaching record. He has a 75-100-26 record since being brought in back in February of 2022. However, his success, professionalism, and hard work has proven priceless in other regards. Just look at how players have grown under him.

What Has He Meant to the Canadiens Younger Players

Cole Caufield is likely the one name that people will mention on players that have developed under St. Louis. Caufield played in all 82 games this year for the club, and recorded 28 goals for 65 points. The captain, Nick Suzuki, also had a great 2023-24, and really came into his own offensively for as strong of a two-way forward as he is classified. Suzuki had 77 points this year. Furthermore, the 2022 first overall draft pick had a big season, with 20 goals and 30 assists, that being Juraj Slafkovsky. And finally, one more young forward to add to the list is none other than Newfoundland native, Alex Newhook. Newhook with 34 points in 55 games started to find confidence and consistency in his offensive game at the NHL level.

Report: Montreal Canadiens Sign Lane Hutson Contract

Now, we must keep in mind that this is a rebuild phase in Montreal, and we have not mentioned the other side of the puck. That side is how to keep the puck out of the net. Well that is coming. Between names like Arber Xhekaj, Kaiden Guhle, and with the very fresh NHL signing of Lane Hutson, the Canadiens do have pieces place. This term of the extension will be perfect to see if St. Louis can lead this rebuilding club into a perennial playoff contender.
